Kazakhstan, early 1961. Daniel Pokrovsky, a medical officer, works with the first Soviet cosmonauts. Daniel, although married, finds himself in a complicated yet tender relationship with a young girl named Vera. Daniel returns to Moscow where he is put in charge of the health of future cosmonauts. His wife Nina feels the same and keeps asking Daniel to quit his job. When one of the cadets dies, Daniel has a nervous breakdown.
