The Soviet Union, 1941: Anna, a six-year-old Jewish girl, regains consciousness under a layer of black earth. Close-ups of milky-white body parts reveal she is in a mass grave in which her family is buried. She climbs out and hides in a disused fireplace in the office of the commanding officer, observing the war from there. Her ingenuity, the items left behind by visitors who come and go, and the treasures she discovers in adjacent rooms help her to survive, simultaneously creating some absurdist, theatrical moments.
