Logline

THE WAILING

A stranger arrives at a village, and soon a mysterious plague starts spreading. Is there a connection? At first they think it may be mushroom poisoning, a theory soon rejected, as suspicions against the stranger arise. As the mood gets edgier, local doofus cop Jong-gu starts getting paranoid, too – especially when his daughter falls ill. Hong-Jin Na, one of the latest genre heroes of Korean cinema, gleefully mixes satire and mystery with a shot of the absurd.

THE WAILING

Hong-Jin Na

South Korean writer-director Hong-Jin Na rapidly made a name for himself with tough thrillers: THE CHASER (2008) is about a pimp chasing his girls, in THE YELLOW SEA (2011) a cab driver becomes a hit man (FILMFEST MÜNCHEN 2011). All three feature films screened at Cannes.
