MONK BY THE SEA

Episode 1: "Monk by the Sea" by Caspar David Friedrich. A dark, overcast day. Or is it evening? Is a storm gathering? The painting doesn't tell us exactly. Then there's the figure standing there in a dark monk's robe. "Monk by the Sea" is one of the most important German paintings of all time. In 2015, when the masterpiece was restored, it was discovered the painter had originally planned the painting differently. The VR experience is located on the coast. We encounter the lonely monk. While in the painting we see only his back, here the viewer can walk around him and get a look at his face.

This VR experience is part of the Competition section of VIRTUAL WORLDS, duration 6 minutes.
