The Power of Series

New German and International TV Formats

Emma Appleton, Sophia Brown, Synnove Karlsen, Aisling Franciosi, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Ella-Rae Smith in CLIQUE

From drug cartels to high society or family business – it's the power plays that go on in such self-contained worlds that enthrall us about our serial formats. FILMFEST MÜNCHEN 2017 is co-operating with Seriencamp München this year for the first time to present the Series Spotlight:

THE COLLECTION, which airs on pay-TV platform  RTL Passion in Germany, deals with a Paris fashion label after WWII, and the two very different brothers who set out to save the family business. The opulent fashion designs and production values make the series absolute eye candy, as is the high society of Edinburgh in BBC series CLIQUE from the same pen that wrote delightfully offbeat school drama SKINS: Holly and Georgia just want to have a little fun at college: Party, screw and get stoned. Then Georgia falls in with the high-powered movers in town and shit starts getting real. Even more so when Janine "Smurf" Cody has your number: Cody runs a criminal clan, and now wants to be replacement mom for 17-year-old Joshua. TNT series ANIMAL KINGDOM portrays a ruthless crime family that will stop at nothing. Admission to the Series Spotlight screenings is free.

Heiner Lauterbach and Henriette Confurius in LINE OF SEPARATION

The German TV industry is doing its best to join the international series bonanza. In the New German Series sidebar, we present the world premieres of five productions that excite, unsettle and preoccupy us: The second season of ZDF legal drama SHADES OF GUILT based on the bestselling books by attorney Ferdinand von Schirach (cast includes Moritz Bleibtreu, Josefine Preuss, Iris Berben and Tom Wlaschiha) again explores the abyss of the human soul. In CULPA - NO ONE IS INNOCENT, an unconventional Priest sets out to prevent crimes he finds out about in the confessional. THE VANISHING, the first series by feted director Hans-Christian Schmid, starring Julia Jentsch, shows us just how far a mother can go when her child is in danger. Director Christian Lerch showcases the stories that take place in and around a highway rest stop in doc series ROADSIDE DINER - IN SEARCH OF THE MEANING OF LIFE. The village of Tannbach in LINE OF SEPARATION is a stand-in for all of 1960s Germany, when suddenly a Wall divides the East and West of town – cast includes Heiner Lauterbach, Martina Gedeck and Anna Loos.
