THE ROBBER HOTZENPLOTZ will open Kinderfilmfest München 2022

Irreverent, inscrutable, and notorious, the robber Hotzenplotz has won the hearts of children for generations. Now he’s taking over the big screen again. On June 24, the latest film adaptation of the classic children’s book will open Kinderfilmfest München.

Austrian actor Nicholas Ofczarek (“Der Pass”), star of the Burgtheater in Vienna, brings one of the most popular children’s book characters to life in this charming film adaptation. The celebrity cast also includes August Diehl as the wizard Petrosilius Zackleman, Olli Dittrich as Sergeant Dimplemoser, Christiane Paul as the widow Schlotterbeck, Luna Wedler as the fairy Amaryllis, Hedi Kriegeskotte as the grandmother, and Hans Marquardt and Benedikt Jenke as Kasperl and Seppel.

Director Michael Krummenacher has a very personal connection to the story: “When I was three, my grandmother gave me the first Hotzenplotz book about Kasperl, Seppel, and the savage barefoot robber. With all its idiosyncratic characters, rambunctious humor, and a whole lot of warmth and magic, this fantastical adventure story invites us to daydream. And that’s the whole point — for children and adults, in life and at the movies.”

Program director Tobias Krell says there couldn’t have been a better opening film this year: “Who isn’t familiar with the nasty but likable robber Hotzenplotz? I’m delighted that this new film adaptation by Michael Krummenacher, which is marking the 60th anniversary of Otfried Preussler’s classic children’s book, is celebrating its premiere with us and opening the section.”

Since there were no school trips to the Kinderfilmfest last year due to the pandemic, Tobias Krell promptly organized an online workshop for classrooms, in order to give school students a behind-the-scenes look at filmmaking and help them understand exactly how scenes in movies come about. More than 1,000 students from across Bavaria took part. The popularity of this workshop validates Krell’s decision to offer it again this year: “The demand for media education content is particularly high among schools. That’s why we’re aiming this year to offer our workshop once again to all the school classes that aren’t able to come to Munich — not just to those in Bavaria, but all over Germany.”

Participating schools receive complimentary royalty-free access to a pre-produced workshop that explores topics from the world of film in an educational and interactive way. Clips from current films showing at this year’s festival are included in the workshop and serve as a starting point for exploring various issues. The workshop, approximately 25 minutes long, is moderated by Tobias Krell (“Checker Tobi”). It will be made available to schools across Germany starting in early June. More information will be available on our website soon.

Kinderfilmfest München will be held as part of the 39th FILMFEST MÜNCHEN from June 24 to July 2, 2022. The entire program of Kinderfilmfest München will be announced in early May.
