The German Cinema New Talent Award

  • Best Director and Best Production for "The Garden"
  • Best Actress, Annika Meier, for "Magical Mystery"
  • Best Screenplay for "Lomo - The Language of Many Others"

Today, Friday, June 30, upcoming German filmmakers were honored with the German Cinema New Talent Award at the 35th FILMFEST MÜNCHEN. The jury – consisting of producer Verena Gräfe-Höft, producer Michael Weber and actor Edgar Selge – gave two of four awards to "The Garden": Sonja Maria Kröner won Best Director, Best Producer went to Philipp Worm and Tobias Walker.

In her debut film "The Garden", Sonja Maria Kröner paints a portrait of a German family in the 1970s in atmospheric images. In the hot, humid summer of 1976, the shared family yard becomes the scene of absurdly comic events. The jury explained their decision: "Thanks to her courageously leisurely pace, the director exposes the electrifying forces hidden under the surface of family structures."

Annika Meier won Best Actress for her turn in Arne Feldhusen's techno trip "Magical Mystery". "In a wild gaggle of whacked-out DJs from the techno scene, orbiting around the magnificent Charly Hübner, actress Annika Meier sticks out with her serious and straightforward performance," the jury said. "We were impressed by the determination with which she forces her relationship to the dissolute Karl Schmidt AKA Charly Hübner."

Julia Langhof and Thomas Gerhold took Best Screenplay for "Lomo - The Language of Many Others", in which twins Karl and Anna are facing their final high school exams: Ambitious Anna knows exactly how she intends to live her life, while Karl devotes all his attention to his blog "The Language of Many Others", where he posts personal pictures of his own family, which tests his relationship to his father.

The German Cinema New Talent Award is one of the most important and valuable German young talent awards. Carrying a purse of €70,000, it is donated by Bavaria Film, Bayerischer Rundfunk and DZ Bank. All directors, writers, and actors screening their first, second or third film in the New German Cinema sidebar are eliglible. Producers can have made a maximum of six films to qualify. The award ceremony and party took place this evening at Munich film school HFF – a celebration of young German film and filmmakers.

The German Cinema New Talent Award-Winners 2017 – Jury Statements

German Cinema New Talent Award BEST DIRECTOR (€30,000)
Sonja Maria Kröner for "The Garden"

We were impressed by the virtuous direction, effortlessly guiding a multi-generational ensemble through the microcosm of a garden. Thanks to her courageously leisurely pace, the director exposes the electrifying forces hidden under the surface of family structures. For this exceptional direction, we award the German Cinema New Talent Award Best Director to Sonja Maria Kröner for "The Garden".

German Cinema New Talent Award BEST ACTRESS (€10,000)
Annika Meier for "Magical Mystery"

In a wild gaggle of whacked-out DJs from the techno scene, orbiting around the magnificent Charly Hübner, actress Annika Meier sticks out with her serious and straightforward performance. A remarkable achievement in this marvelous, multi-character ensemble on its chaotic Magical Mystery tour. We were impressed by the determination with which she forces her relationship to the dissolute Karl Schmidt AKA Charly Hübner. Her performance stuck out among all 16 films of the Munich festival week.

German Cinema New Talent Award BEST SCREENPLAY (€10,000)
Julia Langhof and Thomas Gerhold for "Lomo - The Language of Many Others"

In the Screenplay category, we want to honor two writers who know the story they want to tell. They very clearly and precisely describe the lives and world of a young generation for whom the endless range of the internet is their everyday stomping ground, even if the side effects aren't. In one of the film's greatest scenes, the faceless voices allegorically evoke a Greek chorus. Congratulations to Julia Langhof and Thomas Gerhold for their outstanding screenplay for "Lomo – The Language of Many Others".

German Cinema New Talent Award BEST PRODUCTION (€20,000)
Philipp Worm and Tobias Walker for "The Garden"

In the Production category, we'd like to honor a film and its producers who perfectly orchestrate the symphony of film crafts, giving us a film as cleansing as a summer cloudburst, and letting us witness a wonderful ensemble reflecting the complexity of modern life. We're very happy to honor Tobias Walker and Philipp Worm for "The Garden".
