A documentary coming-of-age film about success and loneliness, friendship and first love, coming out as queer, and having the courage to find one’s own path.
Kinderfilmfest regular Joya Thome’s first documentary tells the story of two girls on different continents who bond through social media and share a passion for gymnastics. Whitney Bjerken from the US state of Georgia is a world-famous YouTuber and gifted singer-songwriter. Sensitive Yara from Neumünster in northern Germany is her biggest fan. As they both navigate the exciting world of social media, they begin to figure out who they are and what they’re looking for in life.
This film is screened in original version with German voice-over.
All ages rating, recommended for ages 8 and up.
Meet the director

Joya Thome
Joya Thome studied education and social sciences in Berlin and received a scholarship for a semester at New York University, where she attended a course in screenwriting at the Tisch School of the Arts. In 2016, she had her feature-film debut with QUEEN OF NIENDORF, an award-winning film about a ten-year-old girl who tries to become a member of the local boys’ gang, which was shown at more than 40 film festivals around the world and was released in eight European countries. Thome then directed several episodes of series for Nickelodeon and ZDF (including DRUCK). In October 2018, she was awarded the Deutscher Regiepreis Metropolis for QUEEN OF NIENDORF. Her second feature-length film, LAURA’S STAR, was screened at KINDERFILMFEST MÜNCHEN 2021. ONE IN A MILLION is her first motion-picture documentary.
