In her calmly related feature-film debut, director Ümran Safter works through her own experience with oppression and intimidation, which many girls in strict conservative communities face from an early age.
Thirteen-year-old Reyhan is spending her summer vacation with her mother at her strict grandmother’s house in a village in Anatolia. When Reyhan gets her first period, she secretly removes all traces of it because she dreads the religious rituals that it will entail. Despite her fear, she attempts to resist the strict traditions and the oppressive image that women of the older generation project.
This film is screened in original version with German voice-over.
Recommended for ages 12 and up.
