This summer, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN invites you to a special edition of the festival with lots of open-air events!

Citywide live

For 10 days starting on July 1, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN will form the backbone of a creative network in Munich with the slogan “Citywide Live” — in unusual locations, with lots of new and long-standing partners and a program of exciting world premieres from Germany and cinematic highlights from around the world. National and international directors and actors are expected to attend many of the 60 or so open-air premieres — live and in color!

We aim to be a beacon of togetherness in the arts!

Festival director Diana Iljine

“With FILMFEST MÜNCHEN Pop-Up in 2020, we were able to celebrate magnificent premieres in the open air; we’re aiming to expand that format this summer. All the films will be shown to a large audience at one of our open-air cinemas and of course — as we’re all hoping — at our partnering movie theaters as well”, says festival director Diana Iljine.

There are plans for eight open-air locations across the city to operate during the festival period. These include the popular open-air institutions Kino am Olympiasee and Kino, Mond & Sterne in the Westpark, as well as open-air locations created specially for the festival, such as on the grounds of the Institut Français in Schwabing and the courtyard of the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF). Bahnwärter Thiel in the Schlachthofviertel will also be part of FILMFEST MÜNCHEN on selected evenings, as will the Pasinger Fabrik and the CityQuartier Fünf Höfe. A multifaceted supporting program that will promote dialogue and interaction is being planned in cooperation with further partners that include the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism and the Amerikahaus in the Museum District.

Filmmakers and audiences shall be able to interact with each other again this year, while of course complying with all safety regulations. The encounters will take place in the venues and online, with the Gasteig festival center continuing to play a pivotal role. The festival will also provide numerous opportunities for industry representatives to meet up, most notably at the “Beergarden Convention”, which will celebrate its premiere at Hofbräu in 2021 with the slogan “The Munich Way the Industry Works”.

The latest safety and hygiene measures will of course be implemented at all screening locations and cooperative venues in order to make culture a shared and safe experience.

FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, from July 1 to July 10, 2021 — CITYWIDE LIVE — numerous festival venues throughout Munich, some 60 film premieres, including an exciting program for children at Kinderfilmfest München.

Details of all films of the 38th FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, including venues and dates, will be announced in the second week of June. Advance ticket sales will begin in the 25th calender week.
