Three to see

Dina and Michael are in their early thirties. He’s a doctor; she’s an actress. They’re happy together until Michael thinks about breaking up. The question, “Couldn’t we be happier than we are in this arrangement?” has come up. But Dina says, “Nope.” In 15 episodes full of surreal elements, we observe our protagonists navigating their way through life over the next seven years as they raise children and continually question their relationship. NÖ is a film about love and living with it; a film about a generation of people in their 30s who have everything, who have tried everything, but who still often fail in silence. The film exposes hidden states of mind and at the same time shows the significant impact they have on our lives.

SUZANNA ANDLER

A villa in the south of France, overlooking the sea, could convey a sense of freedom. Yet Suzanna Andler feels trapped in her marriage to her wealthy husband, who has been unfaithful to her for decades. Now, for the first time, she has a young lover of her own, who has come with her to check out the villa; this upscale address may be considered for the next family vacation. Suzanna wanders through the rooms, onto the terrace, and looks out into the bay. Over the course of a day, she reflects upon her marriage and her affair, her whole life. Can conversations clear things up? She talks to her lover, a friend, a nanny — and her husband, who’s on the phone. Benoît Jacquot’s adaptation of a play by Marguerite Duras is, like the original, set in the late 1960s, but is just as timeless.

SUZANNA ANDLER: July 7, 5 pm, Filmtheater Sendlinger Tor & July 10, 9.15 pm, Institut français.

DIE HEIMSUCHUNG

A twelve-year-old girl is shot and killed when a police operation goes awry. Chief Inspector Ben, who was supposed to protect her, is seriously injured. In order to overcome the trauma, he and his girlfriend Marion visit his parents at their home on the Baltic Sea. Ben had spent part of his childhood in this village, but left for good when a tragic accident claimed the life of his best friend, Timmi. Now Ben learns that Timmi did not die, but has spent the past 20 years in a vegetative state. Marion, who is a neurologist, helps Ben to communicate with Timmi. It soon becomes clear that there is more to Timmi’s accident than his father and the village police are willing to admit. Investigating the matter on his own, Ben discovers that a secret tucked away in Timmi’s memory has prevented him from regaining consciousness all these years. Ben finally realizes that nothing — not the past, nor the present, nor even he himself — is as it seems.

DIE HEIMSUCHUNG: July 7, 5 pm, Kino am Olympiasee.
