Bodily realms

Museum Brandhorst and FILMFEST MÜNCHEN are teaming up for the third time in conjunction with the exhibition “Future Bodies from a Recent Past: Sculpture, Technology, and the Body Since the 1950s”.

Bodily realms

This exhibition, which will celebrate its opening this evening and run until January 15, 2023, focuses on contemporary art’s examination of the relationship between the body and technology. In the cinematic realm, this tension is particularly visible in the subgenre of “body horror”. In keeping with this, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN will present three German premieres — of A BANQUET (directed by Ruth Paxton, UK 2021), DUAL (directed by Riley Stearns, USA 2022), and WATCHER (directed by Chloe Okuno, USA 2022) — of films which deal with changing perceptions of the human body, some of which have monstrous aspects.

In addition, curator Charlie Fox has selected films and videos for a series called “Licking My Wounds: Body Horror Inside Out” which will give an intimate, haunting look at the genre. This selection includes works by Matthew Barney, David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Julia Ducournau, Tarsem Singh, and Jon Rafman & Daniel Lopatin.

Basically, I want to teach the genre itself to be creepy, to present its fetishes and obsessions in their wafting, dreamlike state. These films are more tender, masochistic, enchanted. What’s magical about them is that in their rapturous atmosphere they reveal the equally terrifying and attractive possibility of a strange new sensuality and connection to the body and its drives.

Charlie Fox

On Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 8pm, a panel discussion and film screening with Charlie Fox in attendance will also be held at Museum Brandhorst.

Here are the dates of the films in “Licking My Wounds: Body Horror Inside Out” at a glance:

June 26, 2022 | 10 pm | Rio Filmpalast
June 27, 2022 | 10 pm | Rio Filmpalast
June 29, 2022 | 9 pm | ASTOR Film Lounge im ARRI

The screening times and locations of A BANQUET, DUAL, and WATCHER will be published on June 9 along with the entire FILMFEST MÜNCHEN program.

Ticket sales for all screenings will be handled as usual via the Filmfest website, on the page containing the description of a given film. Online ticket sales start in mid-June.
