The Bohemian Life
Filmfest 2004

Loosely based on Puccini's opera of the same name, Aki Kaurismäki took a break from making Finnish films to create this dry little number which he says is based on the book behind the opera (Scenes De La Vie De Bohème) - as he doesn't like opera. The three bohemians of the title, Marcel is the writer facing eviction, Schunard a destitute artist and finally, Rudolpho a painter. They and barmaid Mimi with whom Rudolpho is in love, sink deeper into poverty and illness culminating in Mimi's untimely death. Even those who detest opera will delight in the quirks and strange cameos that crop up throughout the film.
