Children of Nagasaki
Filmfest 2005

The essays by late Roman Catholic radiologist Dr. Takashi Nagai are the basis for this sincere plea for the sanctity of human life. Beginning with Pope John Paul II delivering an anti-nuclear speech in Japan, it goes on to depict the life’s work of Nagai, who recorded his experiences in the aftermath of the atomic bomb “Little Boy”. Already suffering from leukaemia, he spent his last days teaching his children values and ethics that would help them survive in a ruined country. A rare biopic that infuses Kinoshita’s brand of humanism with the themes of religious faith, he urges his accomplished cast to carry their roles with dignity, while not hesitating to show the graphic outcome of the nuclear devastation.
