THE MONKS are a unique case in the history of popular music and culture. They were the most radical experiment and attempt to change the scope of pop music in the 60’s. During their time in the service (1961-1964), in the US army in Germany, the five GIs Roger Johnston, Dave Day, Gary Burger, Eddie Shaw and Larry Clark decided to make a name for themselves as professional “beat musicians”. They were the first anti-band in pop history.
