The Unprecedented Defence of the Fortress Deutschkreuz
Filmfest 2007

THE UNPRECEDENTED DEFENCE OF THE FORTRESS DEUTSCHKREUZ Castle Deutschkreuz was an insane asylum before the Russians took it over at the end of the war... Four young men sneak into the castle and inexplicably, no doubt affected by the structure’s ghosts, begin a game of war charades, donning old fatigues and weapons they find cached away in one of the castles rooms... Herzog strips the entire film of source sound, laying over the picture instead a rambling series of thoughts delivered by a presumably insane man, connecting the curious actions of these young cavaliers with the mad aura of the castle itself.
