Signs of Life
Filmfest 2007

SIGNS OF LIFE Herzog’s first feature. “Alexander Dovzhenko famously lamented that movies were losing the poetry of ‘the wind blowing through the trees’. SIGNS OF LIFE is a clear sign that Herzog is well-versed to such cinematic poetry, for this movie is nothing if not attuned to the rhythms of the natural world, the wind blowing through drying clothes as a soldier lies dying on the cement, the budding weeds waving in the field where another soldier cleans his gun... the water reflecting Stroszek’s fireworks, the smoke in the sky gliding away in the nighttime breeze. All picturesque things on their own, but this attention to such atmospheric phenomena would be treated as commercial beauty in the hands of a lesser filmmaker, but Herzog uses it as an outward extension of the tortured characters, a landscape of the soul, his peripheral tangents giving the film relevance and humanity.”
