The Postmodern Life of My Aunt
Ye Rutang is a woman in her sixties who lives alone in an old apartment in Shanghai. People of her generation were raised in a very different China, brought up to be kind, courteous, egalitarian and socially responsible. Now, though, Mrs. Ye is like a fish out of water. She has very little money to live on and finds it impossible to hold down any job – largely because her skills and attitudes are so old-fashioned. Her problems begin with her neighbor Mrs. Shui, another elderly single lady, whose devotion to her cat is equalled only by her fussiness and her prying inquisitiveness. A series of encounters with other people change Mrs. Ye's life forever – and her sense of self: who she is and what she lives for.
