Liesl Karlstadt and Karl Valentin
Filmfest 2008

(Karl Valentin, 1882-1948, was a Bavarian humorist and one of Germany's leading comic performers in the Twenties. A linguistic anarchist, he wrote, produced and acted in numerous shorts and features. He first performed in a film written by Bertold Brecht, who once compared him to Charlie Chaplin. He began performing with Liesl Karstadt in 1911 and they worked together for over 35 years.) At their first encounter she finds him dreadful. During the second she falls in love with this strange, misanthropic, hypochondrical lateral thinker plagued by fears of every kind. As the comedy team of Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt they gained fame and fortune, and lost it. Their sketches are so funny that they draw tears, and so sad that they provoke laughter. Not unlike their own lives. This film on a unique couple encompasses jealousy, tears, success and nervous breakdowns, and the story of a love that never died. Production Notes
