Back to Africa
Filmfest 2008

Tata, Huit Huit, Sonko, Waterman and George are not typical migrant workers. The five Africans from different countries are successful artists. They earn their (and their extended families') living performing in André Heller's show "Africa!Africa!", which has been touring Europe for 3 years. BACK TO AFRICA accompanies them for a year - at rehearsals, the show, and on visits to their families back home. The film shows their extraordinary energy, adventurous lifestyles as well as intimate insights into African ways of life and the dichotomies between their lives in Africa and in Europe. The traditional African music played by Tata on the cora or the sweeping drum rhythms of the different dance choruses impart an impression of the richness of African culture. BACK TO AFRICA is a film that provides fresh insights into the soul of Africa and – without falling back on clichés – paints a different, a positive picture of this continent and its people.
