Shakespeare and Victor Hugo's Intimacies
The filmmaker's grandmother, Rosa Elena Carvajal, lives in a mansion in Mexico City, on the corner of Shakespeare and Victor Hugo Streets, together with her maid Florencia Vega Moctezuma. Together the two old ladies open their house and history for the documentarist's camera, relating a story which becomes more and more incredible as it unwinds: How 25-year-old boarder Jorge Rios came to live with them years ago and soon won the two ladies' sympathies. The eccentric gay artist soon had the house decorated with his works, and set up a shack on the roof for himself, "to be closer to heaven." The fact that he wears ladies' dresses and picks up men on the street, occasionally disappearing for days at a time, doesn't disturb them overly - until they notice his absences seem to coincide with a series of murders committed on female prostitutes ... Won the Audience, Critics' and Kodak prizes at Mexico City Film Festival.
