Set in Bavaria directly after WWII. Tom, who lost both parents in the war, lives with his aunt and cousin. While making a slingshot, Tom breaks his aunt's sewing machine. Later, in the cemetery at night with his friend Hacke, they watch a blackmarket cigarette deal go down in which Joe, the black marketeer, kills a man. Afraid of Joe, the two boys decide to keep their mouths shut. But when an innocent man is arrested, they have to make a choice. Tom also has a bad conscience about breaking his aunt's sewing machine. It is almost impossible to get parts and he certainly can't afford a new sewing machine. But if he can trick Joe out of all the cartons of cigarettes he could. He and Hacke set out on a dangerous hunt for the “treasure”...
