Like many working class cities in Japan, Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, is in economic decline. Opportunities are scarce and the population is sparse, except for the large minority of immigrant labourers – especially Japanese Brazilians and Thais. This multicultural setting becomes a hotbed for underground cultures – from interracial marriages to hip-hop rappers. But resentments towards these immigrants are also simmering, creating a unique perspective of modern Japan in the 21st century.

Saudade (a Portuguese word) has no immediate translation in English. "Saudade describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return."
