A Tale of Two Donkeys
Filmfest 2009

Director Li Dawei recalls the Cultural Revolution through this story of a young intellectual, Ma Jien, who is reduced to caring for donkeys in a northern Chinese village during the tumultuous political period. Ma channels his intense frustrations and boredom into the destruction of the production unit's prized animal, reducing the beast from a virile star to dead meat. Then, in a unique twist, the donkey's own brother pursues its own disastrous revenge on Ma, leading both to a destructive finale. This is a bizarre yet unique revenge triangle of man versus nature in China. Hong Kong International Film Festival
