The Kunduz airstrike took place on Friday, 4 September 2009 at roughly 2:30 am local time, roughly 4 miles southwest of Kunduz City, in northern Afghanistan. Responding to a call by a German colonel, an American F-15E fighter jet struck two fuel trucks captured by Taliban insurgents, inadvertently killing over 100 civilians in the attack. The incident ended the peaceful image of the German forces in the country. Ley's TV movie takes another look at the events, based partly on the official records of the parliamentary investigation that followed. The tragic consequences of Colonel Klein's decision are portrayed while avoiding sweeping generalizations.
