Georg Sahl, one of Germany's last mainstream newspaper tycoons, is urged by Frankfurt's mayor to accept the ruling party's offer of becoming Germany's president (a ceremonial office). His wife Franziska, a successful divorce lawyer in Frankfurt, is not at all pleased by the idea of playing the role of 'First Lady'. And Georg's young mistress Nina, a trainee at his newspaper, realizes how that will affect their relationship. Georg is invited to a TV talk show in Hamburg. Nina follows him to his hotel afterwards, determined to make him commit to her. After a bitter dispute in his room, Nina runs across the street in front of the hotel, is hit by a car and seriously injured. Georg, totally overwhelmed, calls his wife. She immediately leaves for Hamburg to commence damage control...
