In the early evening of the 9th of November, it's business as usual for everyone at the border crossing on Bornholmer Straße. But when Günter Schabowski, a member of the Politburo, improvises a slightly mistaken answer to a press conference question about the new liberal regulations for crossing the border into West Berlin, Harald Schäfer is unprepared for what is to come. He is a border guard at Bornholmer Straße, a crossing he once helped set up – and now thousands of East German citizens are gathering there, demanding to exercise their new right. But why doesn't Harald Schäfer know anything about it? Why aren't his superiors able to give him any significant information? The situation escalates.
What next? Close to midnight, Harald Schäfer thinks to himself: "That’s it." He decides to open the gates on his own and becomes a pop culture hero.
