A typical day on the job: Chief Inspector von Meuffels has to try to get a confession out of a young and particularly malicious murderer in prison. What von Meuffels didn't anticipate is that he would fall in love there. On his first visit to the prison he meets a young official who works there, Karen Wagner, and he can't get her out of his head. Since von Meuffels knows pretty much all there is to know about things like murder and manslaughter but has little experience in matters of the heart, the romance that develops between these two shy and lonely people is a gentle, lovely thing. But then there's a bizarre suicide in the prison which gradually arouses in von Meuffels the uneasy feeling that his new girlfriend knows far more about the incident than he would like. His suspicions mount and, almost against his own will, he starts investigating the woman he feels is the love of his life...
