Civil War
Filmfest 2011

"A film about people. About Rui’s timid, silent and inconsequential rebellion, about Helena’s loneliness, about Alberto’s passivity. But also about Joana’s joie de vivre. It takes place on the beach, during the last days of the summer of 1982, and comprises two panels or points of view, the son’s and the mother’s. It is a film of repetitions and cycles. The cinema I like and am interested in making is a great adventure: it makes us embark upon a journey to a new world which only exists through cinematographic techniques. It makes us see objects, landscapes and people with fresh eyes; it makes us new in our own eyes: it is a journey of discovery to unknown lands. The unknown lands are, in the case of CIVIL WAR, human relationships and the way we look at people; I would say they are the people themselves."
