Taxi & Telephone
Filmfest 2015

German Age Rating

This stylish black-and-white film is set in Frunze (today's Bishkek) in Kyrgyzstan in the 1960s. On a dark and stormy night, passengers arrive at the bus station to find a telephone booth and a taxi that can take them to their final destination. However, they are kept waiting by the driver; he's not going anywhere until the whole car has been paid for. So what else is there to do but to make some telephone calls? The conversations, rendered in split screen and full of deadpan humor reminiscent of Aki Kaurismäki's films, reveal the traveler's true intentions, as well as what goes on at the other end of the line.
