The early Sixties. The Blaschkes were refugees from German territories in the East after World War II. They have done well for themselves in the 'economic miracle' of post-war West Germany. But they can't shake the memory of their first-born son, who disappeared in the turmoil of their trek. It is their other son, Max, however, who suffers the most. He feels increasingly ignored and unloved and his parents' greatest wish becomes his worst nightmare. Under no circumstances does he want his lost brother to show up.
