Interesting as a mainstream contrast to Warhol's earlier Underground films. Plenty of scant black leather but that's about where the similarity ends. Whereas Warhol's films were made for a particular, limited audience and many were camp, Friedkin's picture went to territory where no Hollywood studio had ever tread with a graphic, sexploitative depiction of psychopathic gay S&M. The result at the time was a fiasco. Critics lambasted it. People magazine called it 'trash' and the gay community in Greenwich Village hit the barricades.
