Ayiva leaves his home in Burkina Faso to try and find a way to provide for his sister and daughter. He takes advantage of his contacts with an illegal smuggling operation to go to Europe with his best friend Abas. Ayiya makes it to Italy and begins to adapt to life there but when tensions with the local community rise, things become increasingly dangerous. Determined to make his new situation work he attempts to weather the storm, but that has its price.
"Rarely has the phrase "ripped from the headlines" seemed so literal... If a movie as rich and understanding as MEDITERRANEA suddenly appeared every time we read about a difficult issue in the paper, maybe all of the world's problems could be solved... (Carpignano) has a knack for finding the drama in what for other directors would be desultory scenes."
