SANTIAGO, ITALIA

Chile, 1973: General Augusto Pinochet has just toppled the democratically elected president, Salvador Allende, and people are trying to flee the country. Hundreds of them are lucky enough to find sanctuary in the Italian embassy in Santiago. How did they experience the dramatic events that turned their country into a dictatorship from one day to the next? And what emotions do they associate with this period after more than 40 years? While historical footage recalls a turning point in the history of this South American country, some of those affected give us a closer, first-hand impression of the events of that time. This is an appeal for solidarity with people in need, with relevance to history as well as to the present day.

Nanni Moretti

Nanni Moretti was born in South Tyrol, Italy, in 1953. In 1973, he enrolled in the "DAMS" (danza, arte, musica e spettacolo) program at the University of Bologna and began making short films. In 1976, he made his first feature-length film, I AM SELF-SUFFICIENT. His second film, a comedy called BEHOLD THE BUMBLEBEE (1978), earned him stardom in Italy. He's had seven films in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, most recently in 2015 with the tragicomedy MIA MADRE, about a film director going through a period of doubt.
