Logline

A portrait of an indomitable woman, with subtle wit, vivid characters, and echoes of divided Germany.

The residents of a small town in rural eastern Germany have experienced many upheavals, and more are on the horizon. It’s 1999 and Gudrun is celebrating her 60th birthday in a dilapidated manor house that was once the orphanage where she’d grown up. Gudrun’s daughter Lara arrives from Berlin to attend the birthday party. She’d been raised by her stepfather; her mother never wanted to talk about her biological father. Right in the middle of the celebration, Gudrun learns that the former orphanage is to be sold to wealthy investors who want to turn it into a hotel. Is this an economic opportunity for a region with little infrastructure or a betrayal of its history? Opinions in the village are divided. While Gudrun does everything she can over the next few days to preserve the former orphanage as a community center for all its residents, her daughter Lara sets out to find her father and an explanation for her mother’s unyielding harshness.
