Logline

Inspired by true events, this first film by a Danish director tells of a brave struggle for female self-determination in the early 20th century.

Maren, a rebellious and self-confident young woman in 1930s Denmark, is committed against her will to a notorious asylum on the small island of Sprogø. Here she is to learn how to behave like a "decent young woman". Maren's refusal to submit to the strict rules of this repressive system has serious consequences for her and her roommate, Sørine.

Malou Reymann

Malou Reymann, born in Amsterdam in 1988, wrote and directed several short films before graduating from the National Film and Television School in England in 2016. Her debut feature, A PERFECTLY NORMAL FAMILY, which premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2020, was inspired by her own experience of her dad transitioning from man to woman. With her second feature UNRULY she continues to explore how gender norms have defined our reality–this time in a historical context of the real women’s home in Sprogø in the 1930s.
