Logline

An extraordinary documentary about an extraordinary artist who puts a lot on the line in protest against Russia's homophobic government.

Queer performance artist Gena Marvin parades around Moscow in otherworldly costumes, garnering attention in protest against the homophobic Russian government. This "drag activism" earns the support of millions of followers -- as well as threats against the artist's life.

Agniia Galdanova

Agniia Galdanova was born in St. Petersburg in 1987. She studied journalism at the Russian State Social University in Moscow while working for "Afisha" magazine and other Moscow publications. In 2012 she moved to Berlin, where she earned a BA in practical filmmaking at the MetFilm School Berlin and also made some music videos and short films. She shot the documentary short film SOMETHING IN YOU, SOMETHING IN ME as part of the German-Israeli program "Out of Place". In 2019, she graduated from Marina Razbezhkina and Mikhail Ugarov's School of Documentary Film and Theatre. In 2020, she created her first feature-length documentary film, ONE STEP FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK. QUEENDOM (2022) is her second.
