Logline

A haunting family drama by Koji Fukada about the abrupt and tragic turns that life can take.

Taeko and her husband, Jiro, are living a peaceful life when their six-year-old son, Keita, dies in an accident. The funeral brings Park, the boy's biological father, back into the mother's life. To cope with her pain and guilt, Taeko becomes involved with her deaf and homeless ex-partner.

Koji Fukada

Koji Fukada was born in Tokyo in 1980. He studied literature at Taisho University and, in parallel, film at the Film School of Tokyo. After making his first feature film, THE CHAIR, he joined the Seinendan theater company headed by Oriza Hirata in 2005. Fukada made HOSPITALITÉ in 2010 and AU REVOIR L'ÉTÉ in 2013. His film HARMONIUM received the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2016. In 2018, Fukada was awarded the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and shot the film THE MAN FROM THE SEA in Indonesia. In 2019, A GIRL MISSING was screened at the Locarno Film Festival. That same year, Fukada shot the television series THE REAL THING for Japanese television. He edited the series into a 228-minute feature film that received the Cannes Label in 2020. Alongside such directors as Hirokazu Kore-eda and Nobuhiro Suwa, he is campaigning to create a national cinema regulatory agency in Japan.
