Based on the true story of Ukrainian television anchorwoman Yanina Sokolova.
Nobody can fool Nina. This up-and-coming anchorwoman at a television station in Kyiv is known for her hard-hitting interviews. When Nina is diagnosed with cancer, she throws the doctors' advice to the wind and keeps her diagnosis a secret from her husband and co-workers as she continues to work on her career. However, she can't keep deluding herself or those around her for long.
Meet the director
Marysia Nikitiuk
Marysia Nikitiuk, born in 1986, is a Ukrainian writer and director. In Kyiv, she earned degrees both in journalism, from the National Taras Shevchenko University, and in theater, from the National University of Theater, Film and Television (with a focus on Japanese theater). She has been a journalist, essayist, and theater critic. She was awarded the Oles Ulianenko International Literary Prize for her short story collection "The Abyss" (2016). Her debut film WHEN THE TREES FALL premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale and was nominated for a Ukrainian Academy Award in ten categories, receiving one for best editing. It also received the Discovery of the Year award at the Ukrainian Film Critics' Awards. LUCKY GIRL is Nikitiuk's second feature film as a director.
