FILMMAKERS LIVE! IMAGES OF GERMANY

What do a women’s prison, the scarred landscape of a lignite surface mine, and an apartment building in Berlin have in common? In the three films BLACK BOX (the opening film in the New German Cinema section), FOSSIL, and MONSTER INSIDE, very specific places are shown that reveal a bigger picture. Images of Germany that tell a complex story of a society going through change and always grappling with its own past and present? Asli Özge, Christina Ebelt, and Henning Beckhoff discuss German cinema’s rigid notions of society and its dynamic imagery.
